A senior software engineer in the US costs well over US$100,000 a year in salary alone. An engineer of the same seniority in India often earns under US$30,000. The gap reflects two different labour markets, not two standards of work. A full comparison also counts payroll costs, compliance, equipment and management time.
What is the salary gap?
The salary gap is the difference between what a senior engineer earns in the US and what an engineer of the same level earns in India.
Here are the two figures side by side. Both are salary only.
| Country | Salary for a senior engineer |
|---|---|
| United States | Well over US$100,000 |
| India | Often under US$30,000 |
These are the only two numbers in this article. They describe salary, and they describe a typical pattern rather than a quote. Individual salaries vary by city, skill, company and year. We do not publish a price for any service here.
Take a business with five senior engineers. The difference per person is large, and it repeats five times over. That is why cost is the first question most overseas businesses ask about India.
What does fully loaded cost add in each country?
Fully loaded cost is the salary plus everything else it costs to employ a person. Salary is the largest line, but it is never the only one. The categories below exist in both countries. Their size differs, and we give no figures for them here.
- Employer contributions and payroll taxes. In the US these are set by US law. In India they include provident fund and employees' state insurance, among other items.
- Benefits. Health cover, leave, bonuses and retirement benefits.
- Equipment and software. Laptops, phones, licences and security tools.
- Office or workspace. A desk, a home-office allowance or a shared office.
- Recruitment. Advertising, agency fees, interview time and onboarding.
- Management time. The hours your managers spend briefing, reviewing and supporting.
- Compliance. Filings, records and the cost of getting them right.
If you hire in India yourself, you also pay for the entity or employer of record that makes the hire possible. With a dedicated team, those items sit inside the partner's arrangement. Either way they are real costs, and a quote should show you who carries each one.
| Cost line | In the US | In India |
|---|---|---|
| Salary | Set by you and the market | Set by you and the market |
| Payroll contributions | Under US law | Provident fund, state insurance and others under Indian law |
| Tax deducted from pay | Under US rules | Tax deducted at source on salary |
| Benefits | Cover, leave, retirement | Leave, bonuses, gratuity and other benefits |
| Equipment and software | Yours to buy | Yours, or provided by a partner |
| Workspace | Office or home allowance | Office or home allowance |
| Recruitment | Agency or in-house | Agency, in-house or partner shortlist |
| Management time | Low if in your office | Higher at the start, then steady |
Fill in both columns for the same role. Some lines will come out nearly equal and others very different. The table is a worksheet, not a price list. Apart from the two salary figures above, we give no figure for any line.
How do you read a salary figure honestly?
Treat any single number with care, including ours. A salary figure is a typical level, not a promise. It moves with the city, the skills, the age of the company and the year, and two engineers with the same title can earn very different amounts.
Ask what the figure covers. Is it salary only, or does it include bonus and benefits? Is it monthly or annual? Before tax or after? A comparison that mixes these will mislead you, so use the same basis on both sides.
Ask about seniority too. A job title does not guarantee experience. Look at what each person has built, how long they have been doing it and how they handle hard problems. The salary gap in this article compares people of the same seniority, so compare like with like.
Why is the gap a market difference and not lower standards?
Salaries follow the local market. A senior engineer in India is paid at the level of the Indian market, which is lower than the US market, and the same person would be paid differently somewhere else. That is a feature of labour markets, not of skill.
A strong senior engineer in India does the same work as one in the US or Australia. The sensible protection is not to read quality from price in either direction. Interview each person, review their work and set clear outcomes. In a dedicated team you choose every person, so you judge the quality yourself.
Watch for the opposite mistake as well. A very low quote is no bargain if the person is not really senior, or if costs have been left out. The aim is the right person at a fair price, not the lowest number on the page.
What does the saving not include?
The salary gap is not the same as the saving you keep. Several items eat into it, and a fair comparison names them.
- Time zones. You may need overlapping hours, and some people will shift their working day.
- Management effort. Distributed teams need clear briefs and regular reviews.
- Setup. An entity or employer of record takes time to arrange before the first person starts.
- Compliance. Provident fund, insurance, gratuity, tax deducted from salaries and professional tax each carry filings and deadlines.
- Turnover. If someone leaves, finding and training a replacement takes time.
None of these removes the benefit. They explain why a careful buyer compares the total, not the salary line. A dedicated team partner carries the setup and the compliance, so those items arrive inside one arrangement instead of as surprises.
How do you compare quotes properly?
- Write one list of cost lines, using the categories above.
- Ask each provider to fill in every line, or to state that the line is not included.
- Check who employs the person, and who carries payroll and compliance.
- Check what happens if you need to replace someone or reduce the team.
- Check that the contract assigns intellectual property to you and includes confidentiality terms.
- Compare the totals for the same roles over the same period.
Treat any missing line as a cost you will pay later from your own budget. A quote that looks cheap because it leaves out compliance is not cheaper. It has simply moved the cost to you.
You can also ask each provider for a worked example on a role you actually need. A real role, with a start date and a team size, shows the full picture far better than a rate card. Check that every line in the example matches the contract, and ask what would change the total.
This article gives general information on cost categories. It is not financial, legal or tax advice. Salary levels, rules and rates change. Check the current position with your own advisers before you plan a budget.

Questions readers ask
How much does a senior software engineer cost in India?
On salary alone, a senior engineer in India often earns under US$30,000 a year. That is the salary figure only. The full cost of employing someone also includes statutory contributions, equipment, workspace and management time, and those amounts vary by employer and by city.
Is a developer in India cheaper because the work is worse?
No. The difference comes from two labour markets with different salary levels. A strong senior engineer in India does the same work as one in the US or Australia. The sensible protection is to interview and choose each person yourself, so you judge quality directly rather than from the price.
What is the fully loaded cost of an engineer?
It is the salary plus everything else it costs to employ the person: employer contributions, benefits, equipment, software licences, office or home-office support, recruitment, and the time of the managers who work with them. A fair comparison counts all of these on both sides.
What does the saving not include?
It leaves out the effort of managing a team across time zones, the cost of finding and replacing people, and the compliance work behind each hire. A good provider covers these in one price. Ask each quote to list clearly what is in and what is out.
How do I compare two quotes for an India team?
Put them side by side on the same list: salary, employer contributions, equipment, workspace, compliance, recruitment, replacement terms and management support. Treat any missing line as a cost you will pay later. Then compare the totals, not the headline salary.
